Who actually writes the business
The insurers you see advertised are not necessarily the ones writing your state's policies. State regulators publish market share reports listing every licensed company's premium volume by line of insurance. These pages show the top writers of auto and homeowners coverage per state, and mark the carriers you cannot buy from directly, because knowing who is big in your state changes who you ask for quotes.
