Complaint records, straight from the regulator
When a policyholder complains to a state insurance department and the department finds the complaint has merit, that becomes a confirmed complaint on the company's record. Several states publish those records company by company, usually with an index that relates complaint counts to how much business the company writes.
One rule this site never bends
Complaint indexes are not comparable across states. Texas relates confirmed complaints to the company's policies in force. New York counts upheld complaints per million dollars of premium. California publishes a justified complaint ratio. Same word, three different formulas. Each state page below explains its own state's definition above the table, and this site never ranks companies across state lines.
Pick a state
Why only some states: there is no public national complaint database. The NAIC collects one but publishes it only company by company, under terms that do not allow republication. States that release usable files (Texas, New York, California, and a few others) are what can honestly be shown, so that is what is here.
